Flying Lizard No. 45 Qualifies 6th in GT2 for Mosport
August 29, 2009 - Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada - Patrick Long qualified the Flying Lizard No. 45 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR sixth in GT2 for tomorrow's 2009 Grand Prix of Mosport. The No. 44 Porsche will start from the rear of the grid (driver Darren Law, who raced in Montreal this afternoon, was not able to participate in the official practice sessions today). In the No. 44, teammate Johannes van Overbeek used qualifying to continue work on race setup on used tires. The No. 92 Rahal Letterman Racing BMW is on the GT2 pole.Rain dampened the first of the two practice sessions preceding qualifying today, effectively halving the available setup time. Long commented, "Our focus today was on getting to a balanced car for the race. The positive part about qualifying was that we made a large step this afternoon in the right direction and we're closer to that goal than we've been all week. Obviously there are a few cars in GT2 right now which seem to be in a league of their own, but looking at the grand scheme of things we are confident about tomorrow. It's about maintaining focus on our own program and being there at the end of the race. Outright straightline pace is just one part of the equation: strategy, pit stops and consistency are also critical. And if the weather tomorrow proves as variable as it was today, managing that will also add another component to the mix."
In the No. 45, Joerg Bergmeister and Long are leading the ALMS GT2 driver championship, 39 points ahead of Jaime Melo and Pierre Kaffer in the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari. The Lizard duo has held the championship lead since the second race of the season and won five races in a row at St. Pete, Long Beach, Utah, Lime Rock and Mid-Ohio. Flying Lizard also holds a 39-point lead in the ALMS GT2 team championships. There are three races left to go and 75 possible points: Mosport, a 2-hour and 45 minute race (20 points), Petit Le Mans, which runs 10 hours or 1000 miles (30 points), and Laguna Seca, a four-hour race (25 points).
