Flying Lizard's Bergmeister and Long Hold GT Drivers' Championship Lead Heading into Road America Race Weekend
August 17, 2010 – Lexington, Ohio – With three races to go in the American Le Mans Series 2010 season, Flying Lizard returns to the heartland this week for Road America, which gets the green flag on Sunday, August 22 at 2:05 pm CT. In the No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche, Joerg Bergmeister and Patrick Long hold a narrow lead in the GT championship: eight points ahead of Jaime Melo and Gianmaria Bruni of the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari and 11 points ahead of Bill Auberlen and Tommy Milner of the No. 92 Rahal Letterman Racing BMW. In the No. 44 Flying Lizard Porsche, Darren Law will rejoin Seth Neiman (currently in ninth in the drivers' championship) for the 2 hour and 45 minute race on Sunday.
Flying Lizard chief strategist Thomas Blam commented, "We are now two-thirds of the way through a very challenging season in what has to be the most competitive GT field ever in the ALMS. At every race this year, we've seen that the slightest mistake on track or in the pits doesn't just cost you a podium- it pushes you to the back of the pack and an eighth- or ninth-place finish."
Blam continued, "At Road America, everything will have to play out perfectly for us to run out front: a good starting position, fast car, seamless pit stops. I expect that strategy will play more of a role than ever for the next three races. We'll all have to balance the benefit of gaining track position through aggressive strategy calls against the downside of having it work against us, depending on how the chips fall."
Bergmeister, who has won in GT at Road America four times - 2002, 2004 and 2005-2006 (the latter two with Patrick Long), added, "Road America is my favorite track in the US. It has everything you can ask for as a driver: there are elevation changes, blind corners, and both slow and super fast corners. The track just has a great flow to it and that makes it a lot of fun."
In the remaining three races, there are 70 points maximum remaining in the championship: 20 points for first place at Road America and Mosport (August 29) and 30 points possible at Petit Le Mans in October.
