Today’s qualifying session for the International Sports Car Weekend at Circuit of the Americas was held in the rain and on a very wet racetrack, after two previous days of testing in the dry. Qualifying day included two 1-hour practice sessions, the first of which was damp and the second of which started in torrential rain which saw no cars completing laps. Approximately 20 minutes into that session and after the rain had subsided, the first competitors headed out to begin work on their wet setup. During the 15-minute GTC qualifying session itself the rain held off but the track remained wet, meaning that setup time available was limited to the small amount of work completed in the practice immediately prior.

Spencer Pumpelly, who will co-drive with Nelson Canache Jr. in the No 45 Venezuela / eSilicon Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, qualified in 7th place with a lap time of 2:29.353. Dion von Moltke qualified the No 44 PR Newswire / eSilicon Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, which he will share with Seth Neiman, in 5th place with a lap time of 2:28.618.

“I was a bit disappointed by our pace in qualifying but this was our first chance to really push the car in the wet all season long, having had pretty much only dry running up to this point. Our dry setup from earlier in the week is good though, and Nelson has been great at every event on race starts and working through the field. I’m confident he’ll give me the car up at the front for my stint tomorrow.”

Dion von Moltke, No. 44:
“It was my first time qualifying in the wet in the last five years so while I think there is ultimately a bit more pace I could have gotten out of the car, I think we came away a good wet setup. The weather forecast for race time has been variable between dry and wet running but I think we will be in good shape either way, or both ways! We’ll work on improving our front end grip before tomorrow and be ready for whatever comes.”

The International Sports Car Weekend at Circuit Of The Americas gets the green flag at 3:45pm CT on Saturday, September 21st. The race will be broadcast tape delayed in the United States on ESPN2 on Sunday, September 22nd from 12:00pm to 3:00pm CT and live online on Saturday, September 21st on ESPN3.com and ALMS.com from 3:45pm to 6:45pm CT.
