March 28, 2007 — St. Petersburg, Florida — Close on the heels of one of the most exciting race finishes in ALMS history at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, Flying Lizard Motorsports and their twin Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs will hit the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida this weekend. The Acura Sports Car Challenge of St. Petersburg is the second round of the 2007 ALMS season. It is the series’ first event at the 1.8-mile, 14-turn street circuit on the Florida waterfront.

The Flying Lizard and Porsche camps had expected a tough GT2 battle this year with the Ferraris, but no one envisioned quite such an exciting start to the season. Over the 12 hours of the Sebring race, the No. 62 Risi Ferrari and No. 45 Lizard Porsche swapped the lead multiple times, and in the end, the Ferrari won the race by just two-tenths of a second — a record in GT2 for the historic race.

Heading into the second race of the 12-race ALMS season, 2006 ALMS GT2 champion Joerg Bergmeister and Johannes van Overbeek will again team in the Flying Lizard No. 45 Porsche. Bergmeister said, “We showed at Sebring that Johannes and I are a solid combination. It always takes a while to get fully integrated with a new team but I think we were able to fast-track it at Sebring and we are ready to go.”

In the team’s No. 44 Porsche, Darren Law and Lonnie Pechnik will share driving duties this weekend. Law is thoughtful of the challenges inherent in a street circuit, “Little passing room, lots of cars, and unpredictable surfaces make these circuits very exciting. Add to that low grip and an even lower margin for error and you should see quite an event this weekend as the ALMS converges on St. Pete. Should definitely be fun racing!”

The Acura Sports Car Challenge will be held on March 30-31, part of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg weekend. It marks the first of three dates in which the ALMS will team with the IRL. The two hour, 45-minute race starts at 5:05pm EDT on Saturday, March 31, and will be broadcast tape-delayed on SPEED Channel at 8pm EDT on the 31st.
