June 16, 2007 — Le Mans, France — Moving into hour six of the 24 Heures du Mans, the Flying Lizard team is third in GT2 with Joerg currently in the car for his second stint. The first five hours of the race were a rapidly alternating mix of heavy rain and dry track, requiring frequent tire changes as teams struggled to anticipate and react to the fast weather changes.

In the first five hours, the team completed eight pit stops and four driver changes. The Lizards elected to start on slick racing tires, not on rain tires, even though the skies were threatening rain at the start. Johannes started the race in fourth position, and over his 45 minute session was able to continue on slicks and move to second before pitting for a driver change to Joerg. Just 20 minutes into Joerg’s stint, it began to rain heavily and Joerg pitted for rain tires. Ten minutes later, with the track once again dry, he pitted again to go back to slicks and then once again under yellow for fuel.

Just over two hours into the race, Joerg was in P 5 on slicks when heavy rain required a change once again back to rain tires and a driver change to Seth Neiman. Within 30 minutes, the track was again completely dry and Seth pitted for slicks and driver change to Johannes.

Johannes went out in P 8, then over the next hour, was able to move gradually through the GT2 field. The crew made the call to have Johannes do a double stint, stopping only for tires, fuel and a fresh water bottle. During his stint, Johannes moved up to P5, setting the fastest GT2 race lap so far of 4:04.619 before turning the wheel over to Joerg at 7:45 pm CET.

Chief Strategist Thomas Blam said, “It was a tough start to the race and a hard call whether to go out on rain tires or slicks. Luckily the weather held and Johannes was able to do a full first stint without pitting for rain tires. After that though, we had to keep pitting for tire changes — we just didn’t want to risk a problem on the slicks as the track got wet so quickly and conversely, dried out quickly. On such a long (8.5 mile) track not only does the weather change rapidly but it can also dry on one side of the circuit and raining heavily on the other. It looks like the weather has stabilized now though and hopefully we’ll have some consistency over the night.”
