August 31, 2007 — Belle Isle, Detroit, Michigan — Patrick Long was fourth in the Flying Lizard No. 44 Porsche and Johannes van Overbeek was sixth in the No. 45 in today’s qualifying session for the Detroit Sports Car Challenge. Long clocked the fastest GT2 Porsche time of the session.

Long commented, “I’m comfortable with the track now but it definitely took some getting used to. In this afternoon’s practice session just before qualifying, the car was good right out of the box. Thanks to the crew who were able to get the car back together quickly after the spin this morning which damaged the right rear suspension and shortened our practice time. The changes that they made this afternoon really helped, especially in managing the bumps. We’ve identified some more changes which should improve the car from a speed standpoint so we’re optimistic that we’ll be in good shape tomorrow.”

The No. 45 also sustained significant damage in the morning’s practice session when it was hit hard in the right rear by the No. 73 Tafel Porsche. Johannes added, “Because of the incident in the morning, we’ve had very little track time so far and we’re behind on setup, which showed in our qualifying times. It’s frustrating, but we know how to fix it for the race.” Joerg Bergmeister is driving with Johannes in the No. 45 this weekend.

Darren Law is driving with Patrick in the No. 44. He was first out in the No. 44 in this morning’s session on the 2.07-mile street course. Darren said, “I’d expected the track to be dusty, slick and green at the start, which it was. What I hadn’t anticipated was the severity of the bumps. Before we started making setup changes, I was having trouble even holding onto the wheel, especially going into Turn 8. We’ve made some good progress today though and by the afernoon it was much better.”

Race Details

The Detroit Sports Car Challenge will start at 3:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, September 1. It will be broadcast tape-delayed on SPEED TV, starting at 9:30 pm ET on Saturday. American Le Mans Radio and IMSA’s Live Timing and Scoring will be available at americanlemans.com.
