Flying Lizard Qualifies Third and Seventh in GT2 for Petit Le Mans
October 5, 2007 — Braselton, GA. — Flying Lizard Motorsports qualified third and seventh in GT2 today for the 1000-mile Petit Le Mans, which will get the green flag tomorrow at 11:15 am ET at Road Atlanta. In the No. 45 Porsche, Joerg Bergmeister clocked the fastest Porsche time of the qualifying session, just behind the No. 31 Petersen White Lightning Ferrari, and the No. 62 Risi Ferrari which is on the pole. In the No. 44 Lizard Porsche, Darren Law qualified seventh.
Rain and very humid conditions this week have hampered setup time for the teams. In this morning’s practice session, both Lizard Porsches completed just a few laps, electing to sit out the session due to the rain. “Even though we’ve had limited setup time, both Porsches are running well so far,” commented team manager Eric Ingraham. “With the rain and the fact that so few cars have been on track, the track was very green for qualifying so times overall were slower than expected. In the No. 45, we’re happy with our starting position — once again the highest qualifying Porsche. In the No. 44, Darren lost the front splitter early during qualifying after going in the grass to avoid another car, so seventh was the best we could do. It’s a long race, and success here is a mix of preparation, skill and luck. We are looking forward to a competitive race tomorrow.”
With just two races to go in the season, van Overbeek and Bergmeister are in second place in the ALMS drivers’ championship, 36 points behind Mika Salo and Jaime Melo in the No. 62 Risi Ferrari. The Flying Lizard team is also second in the ALMS team championship, 27 points behind Risi.
