Flying Lizard notched its second race win in a row today at the Grand Prix of Baltimore presented by SRT, bringing the team’s total to three wins in seven races for the ALMS season. However, in a turnaround from the last round at Road America, the PR Newswire / eSilicon No 44, driven by Seth Neiman and Dion von Moltke, took the win ahead of the Venezuela / eSilicon No 45, driven by Nelson Canache Jr. and Spencer Pumpelly, which finished in 7th after debris from an opening lap incident punctured the radiator. The team was able to quickly repair the car and over the course of the race recover two positions for important driver championship points. For the No 44, it was Seth’s first ALMS win and Dion’s fourth ALMS win.

The race was halted even before the GTC pack took the green flag, as an incident at the front of the field completely blocked the track at the first chicane, taking out several cars. The GTC pack was able to stop prior to the track blockage but the ensuing red flag meant that the race was shortened by just over 50 minutes, which caused chaos for each team’s race strategy. Once the race restarted Seth moved up to 5th place after another pile up, this time in Turn 4, which brought out another immediate yellow. The team took that opportunity to complete its pit stop, dropping back to 8th in line but not needing to make another stop.

Dion talked about his stint in the car and the race, saying, “The last 40 minutes was run pretty much at qualifying pace, we were over every curb and it’s a testament to the guys that the car lasted. It was the most intense street course racing I have ever been involved in. We had a 34-second gap prior to the late race yellow and it was down to the last restart, on which we were able to build a good gap that we maintained through the end. This was the first time I had faced a red flag in a race, so going into it I had to make a mental adjustment to stay focused on the task at hand. Today really was a complete team win, and in any situation like today in which the race throws you a curve ball, it’s really the best teams that are able to rise to the top. It was a combination of great strategy and an excellent race car from Chief Engineer Steve Conover that allowed us to get to the front. Joining Seth for his first win in the ALMS is so meaningful, given all of the phenomenal drivers that have driven with him. It’s so special to be a part of that, and such a great win for the team.”

Flying Lizard next visits the racetrack for the 8th round of the 2013 ALMS season for the International Sports Car Weekend at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, on September 19th, 20th, and 21st.
