Sonoma, CA — July 17, 2004 — The Flying Lizard Motorsports No. 44 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR took Lonnie Pechnik to the fifth fastest GT speed in qualifying for the GT class today at the Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma. Pechnik and co-driver Seth Neiman will start the race tomorrow from fifth position on the GT grid after qualifying the Porsche at 1:34.914 around the 2.53-mile road course.

The team’s No. 45 Porsche, driven by Johannes van Overbeek and Darren Law, qualified seventh in GT class today with Law driving.

No. 44 driver Pechnik said, “After the many challenges that we faced at Mid-Ohio and Lime Rock, the No. 44 car is once again in a position to allow us to show our potential. I am so proud of our crew, who deserve to see this car back in action.”

The qualifying session had a new sense of excitement due to the debut of a single-car qualifying format which the American Le Mans Series introduced this weekend. The new qualifying format, which is in a one-race trial for this weekend, is designed to increase competition by giving drivers a better opportunity to post their best lap times on a track clear of other cars.

Pechnik added, “The new qualifying format offers us a chance for a clear lap with limited distractions. On small, tight tracks such as Lime Rock, there is a lot of traffic and it’s easy for incidents to happen. The new format will help reduce the traffic problems that occur at short circuits.”

Teammate Law continued, “I like the new qualifying format because it’s not too time consuming; you have to make it happen in two laps, which keeps us on our toes in regards to strategy. I wish we could have qualified a bit higher on the grid, but with a two hour, 45-minute race so much can happen.”
